If you've been searching for a women's gym in Ashfield or anywhere in Sydney's Inner West, you'll have noticed there's no shortage of options — big-box gyms, Pilates studios, bootcamps, and everything in between. But if you're a woman who wants to get genuinely stronger without getting injured, intimidated or lost in the crowd, the differences between them matter enormously. After more than ten years of training Inner West women, here's what we believe actually matters.
In a commercial gym, you're one of hundreds. Nobody's watching your form, nobody notices when your knee tracks inward on a squat, and nobody adjusts the session when your shoulder is having a bad week. In our classes at Movement Studio, groups are kept deliberately small, which means every single rep happens under a coach's eye. It's group training built to feel like personal training — you get individual loading, individual cues, and progress that's tracked from week to week.
Walking, yoga and cardio classes all have their place — but the research is clear: resistance training is one of the most important types of exercise for women, especially from your 40s onward. It supports bone density through perimenopause and beyond, maintains the muscle mass that keeps your metabolism working, and helps reduce the risk of falls and fractures later in life. A good women's gym doesn't hand you pink 1kg dumbbells; it teaches you to squat, hinge, press and carry with progressively challenging loads, safely. That's the core of everything we program.
Here's what genuinely sets Movement Studio apart in the Inner West: the studio is founded and led by Dr Naomi (Osteopath), a registered allied health professional, with an Osteopathy clinic on site. In practice, that means your niggles, old injuries and post-surgical restrictions aren't a reason to avoid training — they're built into how your training is programmed. If something flares up, treatment is down the hallway rather than across town, and your coach and your practitioner are the same team. Many of our members first found us through the clinic and stayed on as long-term training members. (The clinic, by the way, is open to everyone — men welcome.)
The best predictor of results isn't the program — it's whether you keep showing up. That's much easier when the room is full of women of all ages and fitness levels who know your name, notice when you're away, and celebrate your first full push-up as loudly as you do. We have members who've trained with us for five years and counting, mothers and adult daughters attending different timetable slots, and women who arrived 'too unfit for a gym' now lifting more than they thought possible.
Movement Studio is now located inside Kinetic Studio, Level 1, Shop 105, 206–208 Liverpool Rd, Ashfield — entry via Holden St, a short walk from Ashfield station, with stairs or lift access. Classes run weekday mornings and Saturdays.
The easiest way to see if we're the right fit is to try a class free. Call or text 0434 395 408, or explore the timetable and membership options at movementstudio.training. Learn more about the studio here.
